Open Letter to Brad Drake from John Walton

Dear Brad,

You and I actually have a lot more in common than you might think.

We're basically cut from the same cloth—both born and raised Walton County boys.

It's too bad that we've ended up on opposite sides of the political fence.

I know why I'm on the side I am.

My question is, why in the hell are you on the side you are?

You've obviously been driven by misguided motives recently and in the past.

Let's take a look at your vote on HB631. You basically gave away our beaches.

This bill only affected Walton County.

As our representative in the legislature, you had the chance to stand up for us, but instead, you voted to give away our most valuable asset, justifying Governor Scott’s decision to sign the bill.

Brad, you sold us out.

I don't even want to know what you got out of that deal.

Truthfully, I've been around long enough to know that you have a reputation for being for sale—and cheap.

That's what they say in the back rooms.

I don't know what that means, and I don't want to know.

Those days are over here.

The bottom line is, you've got a choice.

You were not elected by us as commissioner—you were appointed.

And this grandstanding crap you're doing in the meetings is pissing everyone off.

You're associating with Suzanne Harris and literal traitors.

If this were 18th-century Colonial America, we'd be trying you for treason.

You sold off our beaches like a used car salesman peddling a lemon.

You sold a used beach to the highest bidder, and it sounds like you didn't get much out of the deal because you're sitting here, a lowly county commissioner in your hometown, about to get your ass kicked.

So not only did you make a deal, you made a really bad deal.

But maybe we can let bygones be bygones.

Somewhere in you, there's probably something useful.

After all, you may be a screw-up, you may be the village idiot, but you're our village idiot.

We have a place for you—just not on the county commission.

Bow out gracefully, and everyone will probably forget about you faster than you showed up on the BCC.

You can ride off into the sunset, and maybe you'll come back around and have a chance.

But let me warn you:

If you stay on this ballot, given the current political landscape and the shady people you’re clearly associating with, and you run, if you qualify, you are going to end up making your family the punchline of a joke for the next 50 years.

And I will personally see to it.

I have a really big mouth, and I’m going to outlive all of you.

There’s an advantage to being the youngest and smartest one in the room.

The story of Brad Drake giving away the beaches will be told in kindergarten classrooms as a fable about what not to do.

It will literally be a part of Walton County lore—kids will learn about “Drake the Snake.” I’m already working on a children's book now.

If you bow out gracefully, you might have a chance for no one to remember it.

But if you don't, you are going to be a cocktail party joke, and it won't just be you.

Your family, your story, it will be a story told for decades.

You’re from DeFuniak Springs.

You know the gossip circles—stories like that get embellished over the years.

So you need to figure out which side of that story you want to end up on.

Because right now, it ain't good.

But you've got a week to decide.

Bow out gracefully and help us get our damn beaches back.

You can redeem yourself.

Own up to it.

Repent, and you shall be saved.

You're a man of God, right?

But if you keep crowing this thing about the beaches not being for everyone, we will come at you with all we have.

The odds are stacked against you.

You have no support.

Truthfully, I don't even think you have any friends.

We know about the waste management job.

It doesn't look good.

Stop making deals.

So if you really want people to stop talking about why you're voting the way you've been lately, you might want to think pretty hard about getting off that ballot.

But the choice is yours.

The choice is yours on June 14th, but the choice is ours on August 20th.

Just remember that.

And don’t worry, I’ll send you a friendly reminder.

John Walton

Actually Rick Scott penned it for his buddy Huckabee because he owned (at the time) a lot here, then DeSantis saw it through….Walton county is the only county that this “LAW” is being upheld….(shocker!!)….now the Huckabbee doesn’t have a lot in Heritage Dunes…we, as locals, might have traction to get this “overturned”….

Not quite sure sure who Brad Drake is but it was Huckabee and Scott who put this in motion!
